Everyone is different, most people do things in their own time. I've heard from converts who knew right away they wanted to be Jews while others took their time, hashing it out. How about you? How long did you consider conversion before you started the process?

I thought about it for well over a year before I even talked to the rabbi, and it was close to another year before I started attending services and actively looking into conversion.

But by then there was no doubt that I wanted to convert.

I was raised to believe that it wasn't an option for me so I never talked about it with anyone, but most of my life I was envious of people who were born into a Jewish family. As soon as I started reading about Judaism, I was stunned that there was something that fit me so perfectly when I had always felt so out of place. I knew instantly that I would be converting. In fact, before reading anything I used to have recurrent dreams about attending synagogue. I would walk in and sit down when the services began. As soon as the prayers began I felt so relaxed. The first time I attended synagogue for real on Rosh HaShanah, I felt that same sense of peace and finally finding my way home. I also would dream that I was really thirsty and no matter what I would drink (milk, juice, soda, water, etc.), it would turn to air as soon as I started drinking it. Immediately after beginning to attend synagogue both of these dreams stopped.

I was 15 when I first approached a rabbi about conversion. He rejected me...said I was too young. Embarassed I did go on to have an official conversion when I was 23 (Reform); and then an Orthodox conversion (when I was 31) after that.

Honestly? Eight or nine years, give or take. I first knew I wanted to be Jewish since I was fourteen years old.

I vaguely considered it a couple of times over a roughly 12 year period, but it wasn't the right time in my life, I think. The third time that I found myself thirsting for Judaism, I wrestled with committing to conversion for maybe a week or two. But it felt like years because it was the first thing I thought about when I got up in the morning and the last thing I thought about before I went to bed and was constantly on my mind during the day.

When I made my decision, it took me a couple of days to get used to thinking of myself as a Jew and adjusting to the fact that the world looks different when you're a Jew. After that, all was right in my life--more right than it had been before my decision.

I hung around the synagogue for a year before deciding that conversion was for me. I didn't really spend much time thinking about it, though, it just was right all of the sudden.
