I do not fully understand the baby naming process. From what I gather a male child needs two Hebrew names while a female child really only needs one but in many instances has two?

I know it's common for some families to give their child a secular name and a Hebrew name. I will admit, I am not of fan of naming children that way.

It has to do with confusing the Angel of Death. But that is about the extent of my understanding about it. It's also why some family's give the child a name of a loved one already dead.

If the Angel of Death comes looking for little Dovid but finds that Dovid, the uncle, is already dead, the Angel will be satisfied and leave.

On the flip side. Some give the child the name of one still living, again in the hopes to confuse the Angel of Death. Death comes looking for Grandpa Shmuel and sees baby Schmuel instead, it will, again, become confuse at seeing such a youngster sitting in from of him and he will leave.

My opinion is the the Angel of Death is not so easily fooled and will get the one he wants.
I think it's basically up to the parent, my youngest four have Hebrew first names and secular middle names.

Edit: this is also why parents wait 8 days before naming a healthy child and why a child in a NICU is not named until it is released from the hospital.

So do girls really only need one Hebrew name? Let's say you've had a little girl. You both had a name in mind that you love love love but it's not Jewish. So you give her that name plus a Hebrew middle name. Does that suffice? Or do you need to give her two Hebrew middle names?

My other question which is probably going to sound stupid is where do modern Israeli names fit into the picture?

To both questions, I have no clue.

My two oldest who came with me into the marriage both have secular names, so that's it for them. The next child has a Hebrew name and Hebrew sounding secular middle name. My youngest daughter, (yes i have 6 kids) has a Hebrew sounding secular first and middle name. My oldest son has a Hebrew first name and a very, very very, secular middle name, while my youngest son(the now 3 month old) goes by his nick name, C.J., because people have problems pronouncing Chaim.(Jacob is his middle name.)
The way I did it was that, with the exception of the youngest, their secular names can be Hebrewized(is that a word? No Idea ) without it being to hard on them. Their names were picked before they were born. All of them with gender neutral names. It made it easier on us.

I think if we had a girl she would end up with a secular first name and 1-2 Hebrew middle names. A boy would end up with a Hebrew first name, Hebrew middle name plus a secular middle name. If we have more than two kids...they don't get names. We can't agree on anything more. Wink and Smile
