PostSubject: New book of commentary on Rut   Fri Jan 27, 2012 1:45 am

The book of Ruth is in Tanakh, not "Torah" in the narrow definition of the five books of Moses, but I think this is the right place for this topic.

I just received my Amazon order of a new book:
The JPS Bible Commentary: Ruth

The story of Ruth is of course the paradigmatic Biblical story of conversion to Judaism. "Megilat Rut" is traditionally read on the second day of Shavuot.

Although I'm saving it for "Shabbat afternoon reading", I've already taken a peek and it looks wonderful. Full disclosure: one of the authors was late wife of my sponsoring rabbi. When I chose "Rut" to add to "Devorah" for my Hebrew name, he shared with me some of the ideas that his late wife had about the origins of the name and about the story, which she had been researching at the time of her death. I was thrilled to find out that her work was not lost, but was completed by another scholar and published recently.
