Beit Din experiences Empty
PostSubject: Beit Din experiences   Beit Din experiences EmptyMon Apr 09, 2012 10:47 am

Anyone feel like sharing their experiences with the beit din? What kind of questions did they ask? It's coming up in the not too distant future and I'm excited but nervous!

Good questions. Mine is in just over a month, but I'm not too nervous about it. I know everyone who is going to be on it, and I think that helps a lot.

I'm also curious to see who was chosen to sit on the beit din. Rabbis? The cantor ? Members of the Board? Religious school teachers? Regular congregants?

Beit Din experiences Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beit Din experiences   Beit Din experiences EmptyTue Apr 10, 2012 8:53 pm

I had a traditional-leaning Reform conversion with mikveh and beit din. The beit din session was in the waiting room of the mikveh. Our synagogue doesn't have a mikveh, so the three rabbis drove with two other conversion candidates to the closest Conservative synagogue 70 miles away. My rabbi asked me to write a summary of my spiritual journey and send it to the other rabbis. At the beginning of the beit din they assured me that by being at the beit din I had "passed" and didn't have to be afraid of failing an interview or anything, though I think it's probably different at an Orthodox beit din. They asked me questions like when did I decide to become Jewish, whether there were any misgivings I have about converting, and how I viewed the conversion as a stage in my spiritual journey. Then I signed a document affirming my desire to join the Jewish people and a pledge to raise any children as Jewish, then I did the mikveh thing and the rest is history!

The three rabbis on my beit din were: 1.) My shul's main congregational rabbi (Reform, but traditional-leaning), 2.) the rabbi who is the senior educator/teacher of the shul's hebrew school (also Reform but less traditional than the first rabbi), and 3.) a rabbi of a Reconstructionist synagogue nearby

I had written an 11 page essay so the Rabbis had a good amount of information up front. They just asked me a few questions and it was done. Very simple, really.

Thank you everyone, it feels great. Probably I would have answered some of the questions a little differently if I hadn't been in an interview type situation, but basically I feel like it went ok.

Good luck to you James.
