PostSubject: "the Jews bombed Syria"   "the Jews bombed Syria" EmptyThu May 09, 2013 9:48 am

Quoth my colleague over coffee. "The jews bombed Syria". Offcourse with a demeaning undertone when pronouncing the word 'Jews'.

How to tell this people.
1. the difference between the Jewish people, some of whom do live and vote in Israel, others don't, on one side, and the political entity Israel on the other
2. that even in Israel, jewish people are INDIVIDUALS with their own opinions who may or may not agree with the decision of their government
3. that the israelian army didn't bomb the syrians but a weapon transport to Libanon, to jihadistic dangerous guys who probably won't help the cause of the syrian people
4. that pronouncing 'jews' on such a tone is racist and offending?
5. that before talking nonsense they should read up about the situation

all of this without getting in trouble and political quarantaine myself?
Sorry, this sounds angry. I don't understand it myself why this offended me so much. But it did. And I felt the need to share to let it out.
Sorry guys!
I'll try not to spam you anymore.

PS: on this instance I didn't say anything. I just went away to talk to other people. But maybe I should have said something, just to be done with it.

It's sometimes okay to "voice" your feelings. And many times it is better that you do it here than by confronting the individual. Of course that doesan't mean we are to be stepped on and used like a doormat either. It is a very fine line as to when and/or how we respond.

What you witnessed has been happening for thousands of years. That doesn't make it right or makes us feel any better, it is just the reality.

I'm happy you feel so strongly about the Jewish people.

I think you did the right thing.

I think you have two options. First, ignore it. Second, inform yourself on the subject (be it this event or another) and politely explain your perspective.

Jews are often not seen as individuals. We are seen as a collective. This is one of the reasons our behavior is important, in my opinion.

Also, your post isn't spam at all. Feel free to share your feelings. Very Happy

Thanks for your answers.

Dena, I'm happy you don't see my post as spam.

I am surprised myself I felt so angry about this, but I did. And I am happy I vented my emotions here, and not in front of my colleague. I am afraid It wouldn't have done much good....

It is beyond me why people can't see jews as individuals, or can't see the difference between the jewish people and the state of israel. *boinks head against wall*

Well, to be honest we often view ourselves as a unit too. When a Jew commits a terrible crime is not uncommon for Jews around the world to feel a collective sort of shame. No, we didn't do it but we're Jews and were collectively embarrassed by what of our "tribe members" did. But here again, it's also okay to point out that just because John Q. committed a crime doesn't mean we all agree with him. We know he's wrong. We're not all going to do what he did.

It's a complicated identity. Razz

Maybe it is a sign that a spend a lot of time (too much?) on discovering Judaism - I'm getting a bit into this tribal consciousness I'm afraid. That must be what me got angry - and actually personally offended- in the first place!

This.

I could not agree more with Dena.

You have both the right to ignore and to speak up - politely, of course. Either way is fine if you are at peace with it.

Just figure out what feels right to do and do it.
