PostSubject: Hanging a Mezuzah   Tue Aug 21, 2012 2:54 am

I'm having an issue with my mezuzot. My husband prefer I not use a nail to hang the case. Therefore, I used a Scotch double sided reusable tape. It is not working. For months and months I've been picking them up off the floor and reapplying. Doesn't seem right to continue to let them fall on the floor. I even hot glued the actual tape to the case (the cases are rather soft) and that still didn't work. The tape has no problem adhering to the wall, the cover just falls off.

So, what do you use?

I use small brads, so not much help for your situation.

What about the products for hanging hooks and pictures that are sticky on both sides? Some mezuzahs come with this on the back so they stick to the door way.

I think that's similar to what I'm already using?

I hadn't thought of that!! I wonder how I should do it. I don't want it to peel off the paint. It would probably stick to the stuff I'm already using (which doesn't peel off paint at all) and then also work well with the soft covers. I made my covers out of Model Magic clay (yes, the stuff kids use) so they are soft and the sticky stuff just has trouble adhering I guess.

Well usually the mezzuzah stays put for a long time. So when/if you have to remove it, it's probably time for a paint job anyway!

Maybe not. I'm not sure if the sticky side of the Velcro sticks to everything. You probably have to cut a piece off and test it first.

I hope it works!

If the concern with nails is holes in the doorpost, but you don't mind a tiny hole in your home-made mezzuzah, you could just sew the mezzuzah to the tape since "model magic" is soft enough to poke through. Or you could use thread or fishing line to just tie the mezzuzah to a strip of the tape. If you use the clear nylon thread, it will barely show.

We have a couple of mezzuzot in our house made of "Fimo" (polymer clay that you bake in the oven to harden) that were crafted by a local artist. I love the one on our kitchen door which features various vegetables. But the "cabbage" recently fell off for the second time. There is a slight crack in the mezzuzah case, and a minor crack in a wall near the door, so I think the doorframe flexed a bit as the house settled. Fimo is a great material for this kind of thing. Years ago, I used Fimo to make a space-themed mezzuzah for my son's bedroom door. The tail of a "comet" makes the "shin". The "Saturn" fell off and I keep forgetting to glue it back on. He still likes science and space and went to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL this summer.

One is up with the velcro and so far, so good! I had several boxes of velcro around here for some reason but all of them are black. I'm thinking I may want to get some white for the rest of the cases. It does peek out a little bit and black looks a little strange.

Great!

I haven't tried it myself, it was just a suggestion, so I'm happy it worked!

Actually, now that I think of it, I did see one hung with velcro at one of the Jewsih Centers I go to. That must be where I got the idea.
